Kenpo
is an art form of self-defense and self-creation.
As a form
of self-defense, kenpo teaches a logical, natural, and efficient
method of controlling the attack of an aggressor. The overall
strategy is devised from the controlling order of the five
animals. The detailed analysis of how each movement is executed
is understood through study of the scientific principles of
movement primarily rooted in the study of body mechanics and
physics. To be effective as a method of defense, the student
must develop physical skill and emotional fortitude.
As a form
of self-creation, kenpo becomes a path of developing the human
potential. Kenpo training becomes a method of instilling qualities
of character: wisdom, confidence, integrity, respect, and
humility. Kenpo becomes an avenue of artistic expression and
kinetic exploration. Kenpo becomes a philosophy that is manifested
through physical movement, where the mind empties and the
body explores its natural potential.
All curriculum
taught in the art, is but a shadow of the true art. The techniques,
forms, and movements alone cannot bring a student to a full
understanding of kenpo, but rather is intended to provide
a nudge to help them along the way. Kenpo at its highest and
purest level exists inside each of us, waiting to be discovered
and set free.
